U don't look like u have CF

I've had my fair share of ignorant nurses and other folks. It's annoying to try to put up with them, especially when my nerves are already shot from the stress of being sick and in the hospital.

I try to remind them that CF is an invisible illness.

Occasionally when I'm really upset, I'll fire off with a nasty retort.

"You don't look sick"
"And you don't look ignorant, but you are."

"You don't look sick"
"I know, I'm Lauren's stunt-double. She stayed home to rest."

"You don't look sick"
"Darn, and I was trying so hard to look bad enough for sympathy. Guess I'll have to keep trying."

"You don't look sick."
--blank stare--"I'm sorry, were you talking to me? It's hard for me to concentrate when I can't breathe well because of CF"

These are so funny, but I think I can top some. Several years ago I had to change Doctors (Insurance issues, I'll say Tenncare, and leave it at that.) and during my first appointment with this new Doctor he looks right at me and ask "When did you catch CF?" I just smiled and told him the story of how my parents met and of the night I was conceived. Sadly he didn't find it humorous. Needless to say I found a more informed Doctor within days.

Another experience was when I was returning an unused O2 tank to a medical supply place and the guy at the counter told me I was the best looking girl with CF that he had seen........then he added that most Cfers are blond and really skinny. I just thanked him and quietly walked out shaking my head.

I will say that I am glad I no longer have the CF "look", I work out and take care of myself. So in a way it makes me proud when people say I don't look like I have CF. Although it does make using my Handicap tag an issue sometimes.......I've had people give me rude looks after I get out of my car, or "mall police" check my tag to see if it's real. Oh well....got to love em'

OMG, you guys...I am cracking up in my little cubicle at work (and I work in a SILENT office).

LOVE Andrea's story of her conception to explain when she "caught CF." LMAO

I get a lot of rude looks when I use my disabled parking placard too - one woman even asked me, "is that yours?" very snotty-like. I'm ashamed to say that when I use the placard now, I purposely walk slower and try to cough so people think I'm sick enough to need the thing. Lame. I also was continuously harrased about this by campus police when I was in college.

RT's always ALWAYS ask me how long I've had CF (and nurses ask a lot too). It never occured to me to be offended, but it's always been a bit annoying. All of your suggestions for responses to these idiotic questions are too hilarious for words. Anybody got any ideas about how to respond to the disabled parking vultures?! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

This just reminded me that the disability doctor (the one paid by social security) that I went to for my medical evaluation upon my disability application asked me the same thing.

Right there I knew I was going to get denied the first time around. Scary thing is that she is an Asmtha specialist. Maybe she misspoke or maybe she didnt really know. Either way it leaves you feeling uneasy!
