Okay, so Cammie just had her check-up the other day and she's great, she's really really great. So why are we starting Pulmozyme? I just hate that we have to start this so early. It's so hard to have to put her through this. I thought that we wouldn't be starting this until at the earliest 2. She just turned 1!!! How early did you guys start, or your children? I get that since she is doing really well they want to start the Pulmozyme as a preventative measure. It's just so hard to have to do this to her without being able to explain why. I just needed to vent... How did you all get through this?

We started at age two -- did it for 8 months and just recently stopped. We found that there was no benefit for doing it, my daughter fought sooo much that I got more meds than she did and we were worried because it was such a large monthly expense pulling from our lifetime insurance cap. We just didn't see the benefits outweighing the negatives right now. We know we'll go back to it, and if she starts lung involvement we are prepared to go back ASAP, but for now we are on a break.

Starting at a year may be a good thing in that your daughter might not struggle as much and it will be part of the routine before she knows any better. But keep in mind that you do have a choice, you do have an input. Pulmozyme is supposed to be a very important drug and very useful, but you always need to weigh the plusses and minuses.

Our oldest started when he was about 4-5 years old. We actually asked about our youngest son when we went to clinic last time and they said they are not ready to start him yet.

Their doctor said that they don't like to start it unless there is inflamation, etc because it is such an expensive drug. Our oldest is on it and it is more of a pro-active med then a re-active one. It seems to really thin the mucus out and they said that since Mason and Tucker has mild lung disease and have yet to culture anything other than normal flora it is really a good thing. I know tha tyou are probably thinking that it is just one more than to do but really I think you will see a difference in the future.
