What to eat to gain weight

There is a product called SERIOUS MASS by a company called OPTIMUM NUTRITION. You can find it at any health food store or do a search online and order directly from the company. I swear by this product. If you have 2 scoops, there are only 14 servings and it is expensive (like 30+) but I wouldn't do without it-EVER! They have vanilla, chocolate and strawberry and you can mix with milk or water and it is good either way. I also drink 3-5 boost/ensure shakes a day in addition to three full meals and many snacks. If you have any questions about this post, let me know, I'll check back later today and answer it!

Also, although fast food and stuff has a lot of calories, there is usually SMALL TO NO protein which is something we all need and 9 times out of 10 it is extremely greasy. A big deal for some of us who have digestion problems. There are MANY other solutions, and other posts on the adult and families topic areas if you want to look there too.

Science is always changing. I do agree you are what you eat and if you eat lots of junk food your body is going to work but not as well as it could if you are eating healthier foods. It is my belief that if a person is going to get diabetes they will but if they watch what they eat they may have a milder form if. Some CF patients want to eat what they want and deal with the Diabetes when it comes along but Diabetes has it risks. Someone said on this board when you are sick the junk food is not going to help. I Totally agree. Sugar helps to breed infection. A little is not bad but three times per day is not good. It is very hard to change someone's eating plan but if you want to stay healthy and avoid infections or recover quicker from infections do some research on healthy foods. You might have to eat more with healthier foods but you will see and feel the difference. Protein good fats and complex carbs

I do agree. Just like eating healthy you can possibly prevent or prolong getting diabetes. Doing your chest physio and properly clearing your lungs avoiding infection will prolong or prevent the chances of lung transplantation. Taking excellent care of yourself while you enjoy life. Sometimes we can do extra things to stay healthy if it means eating healthier, taking naps, exercising, doing extra physio sessions.
You owe to yourself to try. If you do eventually get diabetes or need a transplant you will be in much better shape to handle whatever comes your way.

I am mother of a 3 year old girl w/CF. I asked the doctors about the diabetic questions earlier posted. There are two types of Diabetes...type I & type II. Type I is the kind you get from your body make-up...usually from childhood. This is the type that CFers get because of the problems with your pancreas. Type II is the type of diabetes that overweight children & adults get from eating too much sugar. This is usually not the type that CFers get.

Actually...CFers tend to get Type II diabetes. You dont get diabetes from eating too much sugar. I have been a CF diabetic now for 6 yrs. You can keep blood sugars down by not eating all the sugar foods...but you cannot prevent it. It just depends on the damage of the pancreas. Type I is the childhood kind...usually insulin dependent. Hope this helps

Hey, I'm 16, and I, like a lot of CFers have one of those "abnormal appitites"...I crave food aaaaaall the time. I don't have a problem keeping on weight at all (I'm not over weight, but I'm not thin like a lof of people with CF). I used to be when I was a little girl..I was sickly looking, but once I started eating I never went back...does anyone know what might cause that abnormal appitite they talk about, or if there is anyway to help it? I have diabetes, too, so it's all hard trying to watch my weight, and watch and count my carbs, all while having wild cravings all the time...ugh haha
Thanks
Allyson

Hey there,

I'm a mom of a 17 year old girl with CF. We've had major issues with her gaining weight. She doesn't have the pancreatic/digestic issues commonly found with CF. Good thing. Still can't gain weight. Bad thing. Won't do the tube. Don't blame her. I read your message about the Clinutren, and am totally interested in getting some.

Which of the Clinutren products did you try, which did you think tasted best, and WHERE on earth did you buy them?

Thanks for the info in advance.

Yeah, muscle weighs more than fat, but the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn doing normal, everyday activities!

I am 18 now, and i weigh 100lbs, i have been struggling to gain weight too. I have also been on tube feeds for the past 7 years, yes in the beginning I gained a good amount of weight, but the past couple of years I have had problems with absorbing and digesting the feedings. I just wish that I can stop them and go to calorie drinks and just food but it is not enough. Yes every person is different but i am basically stuck on the feedings untill I can eat enough food to give me the proper amt. of calories. last summer i did try to cut back on the tube feedings and snack more through out the day but i lost to much weight so now i am back on them 6 to 7 days a week. I dont want to tell you not to do this bc if you need it, it does help but try this as your last resort.

Last anonymous poster,
Do you have any authority on telling CFers what to eat? Granted you still need all your food groups and stuff, but anything a CFer eats to gain weight is "healthy" eating.

Try orange flavored Coromega. You can get Coromega for 35% off of retail from www.softecare.com. Really like Coromega as gelcpas make me sick right now during my pregnancy. Highly recommend Coromega to all as it does a lot of good things for your baby. I have heard that over 50% of a developing fetus brain is made up of omega-3s!

FWIW,
Karen

I agree with Emily, i hate it in school when I eat crisps and drink fizzy drinks and so many people say "omg. you eat so much junk food! That is so bad for you blah blah blah" sitting there eating their salads and drinking water, thinking they are so good for sticking with their diets! Not that I've anything against eating salads or drinking water or anything!
