Hi All,

This is my first post after lurking for a while. GREAT FORUM!!!

Anyway I'm on my third illness in about the last 15 months.

#1 Jan 08-Mar 08 I was on IVs for part and recouping the rest due to physical exhaustion. In the hospital for 5 days.

#2 Jul 08-Sept 08 On IVs again and hospitalized for 9 days.

#3 Mar 09-present TOBI/Azi combo. No hospital stay but off work till 4/1.

I enjoy working and love the mental challenge. However, I work as a tax manager for Ernst & Young and the job can be stressful during busy seasons. I recently reduced my schedule to like 32 hours a week. However, sometimes due to a deadline I end up working like 40-45. I can reduce my schedule further, unfortunately my salary goes down as well. My firm is extremely understanding and supportive FYI.

Any thoughts at what point I should think about going on disability? We have great LT disability coverage here but I hate the thought of losing the mental challenge and social interaction I get from work.

Any thouughts?

When to "retire

this post is like reading my own thoughts, honestly. i'm an attorney so i have the same issues with reducing my schedule - it never ends up that i work any less than 40 hours a week. i also adore my job, i love the challenge, and i don't know what i would do without work during the days. the thought of losing work -- the social interaction and people, the challenge, the whole deal -- makes me feel kind of ill, frankly.

i've been on ivs for more of 2009 than i've been off of them. last year i had ivs 5 times for about 3 weeks each. in between i alternate tobi and azi. my doctor has talked to me about disability, but she's also supportive of me trying to find some sort of balance between work and my health before i give up on the former altogether. it's so tough though.

i think it's a discussion you need to have with your doctor first. sort out your own feelings as much as possible and then bring it up with him/her to get another, more medical opinion. one thing i'm beginning to see is that while i *might* be able to continue balancing health and work right now, it's not leaving much time or energy for anything else. i'm not sure how i feel about that yet, but it's something else to consider. as much as i love my job, i also get fulfillment from being able to have something of a life outside the office.

my doctor has suggested i take short-term disability to see how it affects my physical AND mental state, and then maybe move from there once i have a better idea if disability would be beneficial and something i would be willing to put up with longterm. the simple fact for me at least is that i would probably stay at least a little healthier if i eased up off work more, but i also don't want to give up too much of makes me feel fulfilled and happy. make sense?

i guess what i'm saying is there's probably no right time. if you're thinking seriously enough about it to post, your instincts are probably telling you that you're at a point where your health could benefit from slowing down or stopping work. at the same time, you have to work both body and mind to find a balance that you can LIVE with, not just survive with.

Sounds like we're in the same boat. Professional services can have it's up and down sides for sure. Heck I thought about being an attorney but thought "they work way harder than those of us in public acctg" <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Good point on the "your instincts are probably telling you that you're at a point where your health could benefit from slowing down or stopping work. at the same time, you have to work both body and mind to find a balance that you can LIVE with, not just survive with." comment. I really feel like I'm at a decision point soon. Or maybe it's just part of being 40 (thankfully).

Thanks again and stay well!

What state are you in PinkPigg?
I was in a similar situation, while I enjoyed my job (engineering) 40-50hrs/wk plus all the treatments left me exhausted and getting sick more often. California has the State Disability program where I now work part time (~20hrs/wk) and am reimbursed by the state where the other 20hrs. You have to work in CA and pay into the system for 18 months I believe before you can use it.

Some weeks I get close to 40 hrs, but not often. It's really nice when I just put in 4-5hrs per day. I try to keep a regimine that helps my health for the extra time I have. Doesn't always work out that way. Try to get off by 3pm, do some exercise and cooking, plenty of time for treatments and chilling. All good for my health and I work. It doesn't last forever, but working part time is a great option. It took me a few months to work w/ my company to ween down the work stream I get. Even if I have a busy week, it's not as bad as when I was full time.
