Well I have always boiled my nebs for 20-30 mins to sterilize them, every 2-3 days. I currently have 2 pari lc plus, and 2 of the newer pari nebs that are supposed to make the medicine smaller molecules. I got them in July, and marked them with the date. They are supposed to last 6 months atleast. I previously had a problem where after a while, they flat out wouldn't nebulize the medication properly. They wouldn't produce any mist at first, and then after a while, produce a very weak mist, that would take either an extremely long time to neb the medication, or never finish it. I ordered the brand new nebs and that problem went away and all was good (boy what a difference properly nebed hypertonic can make for you).
Well now it seems i'm back to that situation with the new nebs. Here is what I think is happening. Even though it says you can boil them and reuse them up to 6 months, I think after a while, the plastic inside the chamber that makes a proper seal so the medication has resistance to the air and then nebs, erodes away from boiling, and in turn within a few to several months (determined on how often and how long you boil them), they become useless.
Going through cups every 2 months is going to be a huge pain in the ass. The reason why I boil them instead of some of the other discussed methods, is because it's a chemical free solution (you know how sensitive pulmozyme is), and pretty much guaranteed to kill off everything. So I'm curious, what are some of the other options that are out there for sterilization that won't harm my other medications/myself? Thanks in advance for any advice...Until I find an alternative, guess ill just be buying a fleet of new neb cups every 2 months <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
