When I need the physio and do the vest I can tell a huge difference. When I'm doing well though and not so congested on a regular basis, then doing the vest doesn't "feel" like it's doing anything. It feels like a little nat buzzing around my face without any purpose. I know deep down though that it's important to do even when I feel really strong and healthy.

Hermit, I guess my answer would be: not applicable - I use the vest. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

If your lung function is too low, would these not be a useful CPT tool? I have been thinking of inquiring about the Acapella to incorperate into my routine. IF low function makes them less effective then it seems fruitless? Any thoughts!!!!!!!!!</end quote></div>

I would think it would actually improve lung function over time because it forces you to do deep breathing. The Acapella has a resistance setting, so you can start easy and hopefully work your way up. In that perspective, I would think it would be better than the Vest, but that's just my opinion. If your lung function is too low to actually produce anything, though, I would do as you said and incorperate the Acapella into your normal routine, and go from there.</end quote></div>

Ok you missed what I had said... my breath didn't have enough pressure to use the Acapella valve, therefore it didn't work for me. Regardless of the settings, at the time I was put on it the lightest setting was still to hard for me to produce anything from it. Same with the Flutter Valve. I also had both the blue Acapella and the Green Acapella. So yes I tried them both.

Edit:

Little clearification(sp), I am not saying that low function makes them less useful, what I was saying is for me... my function was to low for the device to work for me. I couldn't push through the valve. Hey, that is just me. Others may and do find it to work very well for them. Just cause it didn't work for me, shouldn't discourage someone else from looking into it for themselves. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I also receive Chest PT from a physical therapist who comes to my house three times a week. When I have a clean out, this is upped to 5-7 times a week. I have tried the vest, but as this is not an anti-vest thread, PM if you would like to hear why I don't like it.

THIS has me wondering. If your lung function is too low, would these not be a useful CPT tool? I have been thinking of inquiring about the Acapella to incorperate into my routine. IF low function makes them less effective then it seems fruitless? Any thoughts!!!!!!!!!</end quote></div>

I have low function and I have thought that the acapella has actually helped me strengthen a bit. Breathing against the slight resistance and all, I feel like my lungs get a little stretch...it's a mini workout for my lungs <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Also I like the acapella because sometimes I get so physically tired form coughing. Like when something in my lungs is bugging me and I'm trying to shake it lose coughing..and coughing and coughing....it's nice to just go grab the thing and try blowing into it a few times to help shake things up instead of having to continue to make myself cough so frickin violently I'm affraid my skull is going to explode and my eyeballs bug out. (sexy image eh?)

I love love love love love my acappela.. It is a wonderful tool... I do find the vest to work.. when I take the time to do it correctly.. The acappela had drastically improved my compliance.. It is easy to use and very very effective..

I use the vest several times a week and the acappela in between... I would love to have someone come to my house to beat me.. I actually if I could get past the shyness would really like it because it is very effective

I don't do the vest- mainly because we don't have it here so I've never had the option! All I've ever done is CPT- get someone to beat me morning and night and exercise when I'm well enough. I feel that exercise works best and CPT works OK. Can't comment on the vest though because I've never tried it!

I understand Jerry. I would have just be more hesitant about getting it if it was a pricey item like the vest & might be less likely to work well with lower lung function. As many others have said they were able to at least start on the lower setting & work up even with lower lung function. Sorry to hear you didnt even get the benefit of the lower setting.
