As long as alcohol is legal and mary jane is not, I can't logically respect our federal government. And I thought UNOS was a card game? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I think the point here goes beyond the printed article. As others have pointed out, it's the "rules" that have interferred from someone getting a tx, not the "reason"

I'm currently taking Marinol. Marinol is considered a "controlled substance". Marinol is man-made derivitive of POT. So, would this eliminate me from that tx list? Probably, considering the "rules" combined with my PAST.

Which brings up the other point - pot has known medical benefits. The only reason they have a man-made version, is to eliminate the stigma attached to marijauna itself.

Sure, we could read the article and say nothing but to remember "don't smoke pot if I ever want a transplant," or, we could bring up valid points about the topic to work around the "problem" of "living to the letter of the law"

It seems they need to know when to bend the rules for some patients, however that will never be if we simply condemn anyone who has ever smoked/used pot, or any other controlled substance.

Hell, it isn't just marijuana they can deny transplanting for either. I had been on Duragesic patches for 2 years and various narcotics for 3 years before that, ALL suggested and given to me by a pain management doctor (I wasn't told this would affect a transplant decision until I've gotten bad enough that they are trying to get someone to accept me). St. Louis declined me for "chronic narcotic use". I guess I can understand why, but I would have liked to have known before it was this bad. Thankfully though I was able to detox off with methadone so we are appealing their decision. I may find out tomorrow if I even get an evaluation or not.

But as far as marijuana goes, I've been around people smoking it but have so far kept away from doing it myself. I wouldn't mind eating it though, I sure could use the appetite stimulant.
