I am preparing for my son and have a life insurance policy in place and I am looking for an indemnity plan. I did come across Combined Insurance, but I also found a web site with quite a few complaints for the company. (www.complaintsboard.com) Has anyone had a specific issue with them? Was it difficult to get coverage/sign up?!? Any other insurance companies anyone would recommend?
So appreciative for all the information and support on this site!

Your state may not allow your SON to get an individual policy because he is under 18. But CF is NOT an exclusion at this time. If I were you, I would call the company and speak to a supervisor, doesn't sund like they know what they are talking about!

Karenmichelle, in my last 3+ years of research combined is the ONLY company that still covers CF, and believe me, my research has been extensive!!!! Afterall, it is part of what my nonprofit does . Honestly I recommend you get him on it ASAP!!!
Honestly, you are going to find complaints about any ins. company out there. Google aflac, they are very reputable but also have a lot of complaints.

I've had to "fight" a few claims to get them paid with Combined, but it's been MORE than worth it!!!

Hey Julie-what would you do in my case?

I am 37 years old next month, FEV1 is about 85-90%....I have only been hospitalized once CF related and it was 10 years ago.....when I was pregnant with my first child and not gaining weight (normally I have no problem gaining weight-I am overweight!).....

I want to get the plan in case I ever need it in the future....but will it be worth the $67 I have to pay each month? Who knows when I will be hospitalized....??? Right now oral meds deal with any issues I have. I really think having this kind of plan is a great idea-and I would hate to need it in the future and not have them cover CF.....

If you have medicaid, SOME states will take that $$$ but that is NOT the case for every state.

@marci... that's a tough call. When you add it up, $67 is only $804 a year. Maybe you won't use it for say 5 years so that's $4020 that you'd pay for an ins policy you didn't use for 5 years. But then say in the subsequent years you are hospitalized at least 1x a year (even for just a tune up) for 8 days...that's about $3000 EACH hospital admission. and some states DO offer "home recovery" after hospital confinement where you can get $100 PER DAY to match each day that you were in the hospital.

You also have to think about the non CF stuff... break a leg (maybe you're in a car accident), Maybe you need your gallbladder removed.... who knows. Personally, I'm DAMN healthy and I still have a policy on my family. To me, it just doesn't make sense not to, and my budget is rediculiously tight but I've cut out other things because it's important to me. (since you asked )

I think these policies make a whole lot of sense if you have a potential need to use them (most Cfers), and/or if your existing family health insurance has high out of pocket expenses in regards to hospitalizations that you want to protect yourself from.

If you are perfectly healthy and have and will continue to have health insurance with good hospital coverage I personally would not pay for this. The chances of a healthy 30 something year old and even children from breaking even on a hospital indemnity policy would be pretty low. Now if something came up and you are diagnosed with a medical condition that requires lots of hospital time, then well you missed out on the potential for the payout. The other thing to consider is the length of hospital stay. If you looked at the reasons a healthy person might have the need for a hospital stay, I think the length of stay in the hospital would be fairly short, (ie 1-3 nights) which makes the payout not much more than the yearly premiums.
