I just don't think it was appropriate for a doctor (or anyone else) to 'limit' my life. I have lived an amazing life, I've done things I never thought I'd be able to do, I've seen places I've only dreamed of. That is what it is about for me. I don't live in a bubble, I truly LIVE my life, and I'm so proud of that.

</end quote></div>

You limited your own life. Your doctor's didn't make life choices for you - they simply gave you information.

You were the one that didn't care how you acted.

You were the one who didn't plan for your future.

<b>You will find others on this board were given the same information that you were, and didn't make the same life decisions that you did. </b>

The blame doesn't belong on the docs for giving you a prognosis.

The blame belongs on you for your choices.</end quote></div>

Maybe I confused some of you by stating that I didn't try hard in school. Just becase I didn't 'try hard' doesn't mean much. I graduated with honors from high school, I had a full ride to a college, graduted from there with honors. Now I am an owner (along with my husband) of a multi-million dollar company.
So please don't take my words out of context. I think some of you who responded negatively didn't realize where exactly I'm coming from. I was simply saying that I didn't have a good outlook on my life b/c a dr said something I didn't appreciate and I had to do a lot of work on myself to get over that. I DIDN'T ask for a prognosis, I didn't want one, they told me (and my parents) without ever wanting that kind of info.
I simply put this post on here to see how many others were in the same boat as me and the answer is a lot of people were given the same kind of info. Some took it well, others did not.
But this whole thing is worth is for the simple fact that KTSMOM posted on here. I want people like her (moms to CF'ers, young CF'ers, teen CF'ers) to know that you should never give up hope. Don't let anyone take that away from you. I didn't expect for others to be so negative. Geesh!

<b>And doctors are going to spread the information at their disposal (which will be the averages at the time). Plus, quite frankly, it's their job and responsibility to spread any information they have at their disposal about your condition.</b> An average life span is just that -- an average. But it's fairly important information that they have that they should be passing on. If my doctor had kept information from me because it was an "average" and "not set in stone" I'd be pretty pissed, because they would've left out a whole load of CF information that's valuable. A whole lot of medical information in general is based on averages.</end quote></div>

God I love you old farts.

Well I was diagnosed the day I was born, the docs told my parents not to get used to me because I wouldn't live through the night, the next morning they said "Well we don't know how he lived through the night, but he'll be dead by tonight." then that night they repeated themselves. This happened daily and nightly for the three weeks I was in intensive care. Finally they sent me home saying "Don't get attatched, we're only sending him home because it's pointless keeping him here, he won't live long though."
And now almost 21 years later I'm still kickin'.
That was the only time I was TOLD by doctors how long I had to live, but when I was about 13 somehow I got hold of some articles and for some reason was convinced that I'de die between 18 and 25. Now I know that's way off, and honestly I expect my time'll come in the mid thirties. And that doesn't scare me.
