Sinus Surgery

just because one would need more sinus surgeries it STILL does not mean that surgeries cause those future surgeries. CF causes those future surgeries. it isnt called CHRONIC sinusitus for nothing you know. surgery doesnt cure it hence why one would always need future surgeries. for the last time, surgeries DO NOT cause future surgeries.

Wow, what a firestorm. Let me clarify a couple things. My first sinus surgery was when I was but a small, small child. Since then, over my 46 years I've developed polyps. So bad sometimes they would plop out of the end of my nose requiring an immediate trip to the doc.
I feel strongly that all my surgeries were necessary, even the ones I had at a child and did not have the opportunity to make up my own mind about it. Each one has helped.
With that in mind the 3 I've had in the past year and a half have benefited me the most. I can't tell you how the procedure has improved over the years. The recovery time is amazingly fast now.
My bad sinus's are due soley to the CF. In some cases I let things go too long and that is why I believe the bone issues are the way they are.
Does surgery bite! Of course, but so does headaches and pressure so bad that is blurs your vision. There can be days you can't concentrate on anything the pain can be so bad. I'm sure my head would have exploded years ago had surgery not taken place.

And that is my point...If you *have* to get the surgery done due to a very bad sinus condition, to the point where quality of life is way reduced, then by all means go that route. I know I would if I was not able to maintain my quality of life via my alternative treatments. I just personally don't want to ride that never ending train of surgeries unless I have to. As of now...I use sprays, better diet, 2 strong saline nasal douches a day, lots of draining and spitting, and aggressive vest therapy. So far I guess i'm winning. I occasionally get a headache in a weird place in the back of my head, but I have been able to deal with that also, to where it's a rare occurance.

If I would have accepted my ENT surgeons recommendations, I probably would have been on my fourth surgery by now easy. As I have said before, I am not saying do not get surgery. Obviously if you are way screwed sinus wise, quality of life is way diminished, and alternative treatments haven't helped/solved your problem, then by all means go with the other option. I'm just saying, if you have slight sinus problems, and alternative treatments are working atleast for now, I wouldn't personally do it...Considering what all will take place. Sure, let's just say for the sake of argument that sinus surgery does not create more sinus surgery. But let's also say for the sake of real life experiences, once you have sinus surgery, it's nearly guaranteed you will have more sinus surgeries, and probably even more after that, and then more. If you can fend that increasingly frequent procedure off as long as you can, why not?

11 years ago i had a sinus surgery for removal of polyps and opening of the sinus's. I could not smell a thing before the surgery, and one side of my nose was consistantly closed at all times no matter what. I now have both sides open most of the time ( unless theres a cold or infection in there) and i can smell things every here and there. I dont have a perfect sense of smell, but at least i have some sense of smell which i didnt have before the surgery. The surgeon told me i had a huge cluster of polyps way back in my sinus that eroded some of my bone, so i know what you are talking about Daveyboy. Yikes what a thought
He also had to straighten my septum because the polyps were deviating it. He also trimmed the ethmoid sinus's under my eyes so i could have some drainage. Im glad i havent had to go thru that again though, so i feel for your situation. HOWEVER i did come home with something i didnt expect .... cepacia. So when you go in , just be extra careful about hygeine and disinfecting whatever you may touch in the hospital room....bed rails, table, tv remote, phone, door handles, everything you may touch. Good luck with your surgery and i hope it will be the one that repairs everything permanently
