The New Lung Transplant Guy

I don't really agree with this at all. I understand why people would be angry but how can we figure out who is "worthy" of a transplant. Like someone else said, ok so the CFer should get them first, so then we have to go down the line of CFers and rate how well they do their medicine, workout, and everything else and then give the lungs to that person. That is riduculous!

Also, what if someone was a smoker and tried to quit many times but could not? They just didn't have that much self control? I am not going to hold it against them if they really tried. Also, my mom is a recovering alcoholic, and if she needed a liver I would hope she would get one. Keep in mind alcoholism is a disease and no matter how hard my mom tries she still falls off the wagon sometimes.

In the end, I feel it is impossible to judge anyone who gets lungs especially if we don't know them

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote><i>Originally posted by: <b>Pumuckl</b></i>I guess what agitates me is that most smokers (not all) are inconsiderate and subject us non-smokers to their second hand smoke. Be it someone that lights up as soon as they walk out of a store/mall or someone that has to light up at a public place such as a State fair. These folks complain about laws that prohibit smoking in public places but will be the first to cry for new lungs when theirs fail.</end quote></div>

Woah, woah, woah...time out! Smokers who go outside to light up are not inconsiderate. If they go outside to smoke, why complain? They're not doing it in your face, blowing smoke right down your windpipe! At least they had the consideration to go into an open atmosphere to satisfy the habit! And not to burst anyone's bubble here, but I doubt cigarette smoke is any more harmful than all the other toxins floating around in the air. The minute you go outside, you're breathing crap, reguardless if someone is standing out with a lit cig or not. What do you want people to do, round up smokers like cattle and sick them in a big bubble somewhere? If that's the case, then lets do the same with people with colds...how about people with cepacia, too? They all pose a threat to other's health. I could go on...

Before anyone demonizes all smokers, let me tell you something; my mother is a smoker. She's tried time and time again to quit and can't. Putting aside the addiction, its her coping mechanism. She deals with a lot of stress in her life (my CF being a big stresser) and uses it as a way to calm her nerves and collect her thoughts. And every time she lights up, she leaves the room if I'm in it.

Now, granted, she could turn to something else to cope...alcohol maybe? Drug use? No thanks, I'll take the cigarettes!

Yeah, it sucks that some smokers have the audacity to want new lungs after they've screwed up their own. But not everyone with a ciagrette addiction wants a second chance, my mother being one of them. She accepts the risks of her habit and doesn't wish to have a transplant if she ever needs one. So please, think before you sneer at every guy with a cigarette standing outside a restaurant!

Ive been on the tx waiting list for two years now...I also disagree with the idea that ex-smokers are unworthy of new lungs..everyone deserves a second chance surely? My boyfriend is a smoker..he doesnt smoke around me and spends his whole time caring for me..so I could never demonise a smoker, as he is essentially keeping me alive right now.All of those COPD sufferers that need new lungs have families of their own..why does a cf sufferer have more right to happiness than that persons family? Plus if you wanna start playing the whole 'this isnt fair' game...whats fair about having cf full stop? People dont smoke in order to offend or upset us - we've been dealt a rubbish hand and thats the end of it.
