Do not sit in judgement of others lest you be judged.
Has anyone who is so judgemental about this man getting new lungs ever smoked or tried to quit.?.
I just say, "If anyone has a second chance to live, who are we to say nay?"
I think if it was one of your own family members, you having CF and them having smoked but their lung damage is more severe and they could die, would you stand up and say, no, don't give them new lungs....give them to another CFer...just a thought.

I have mixed feelings on this whole thing. I did feel a bit "hurt" when they said he was a longtime smoker (and not a CFer like originally thought), but also know my grandparents both smoked and smoking was what caused their deaths, and I would have been very happy and greatful had they gotten new lungs to keep them alive.

I also wanted to mention that saying some people don't "deserve" lungs because of what they didn't do (say NO to cigarettes) is MAYBE not a valid argument, unless you'd be willing to also say some CF patients don't "deserve" lungs because they didn't do their treatments consistently, didn't exercise like they should have, etc... I mean, its just something to consider.

I don't know if anyone would say that one CFer wouldn't be as "worthy" of lungs just cause they didn't follow what docs told them to do to stay healthy. Ya know? I mean, is one person less worthy of lungs cause they smoked before they knew how bad it really was versus a normal person who needs lungs for whatever reason? Just like is one CFer less worthy of lungs cause they didn't go to the gym or eat high calories or do all their treatments as their doctor said they should? I know we are BORN with CF and have absolutely no choice about that, but we do have a choice what we do with our treatments, etc., right? Just like a "normal" person has a choice whether they smoke or do things that may lead to a decline in his/her health. If you're going to strike "normal folks" down for getting lungs based on their decisions, wouldn't you also have to strike down a CFer for getting lungs based on his/her decisions?

Just something else to ponder....

.... BUT, I do need to add that truthfully I felt similar to what Jennifer had to say on this when I first read the news story. We know people who have CF that are dying on this list and to get "bumped" by a smoker does seem a bit unfair at face value.
