the scar

At first my surgeon told me he wanted to make two incisions. Not like Lindsey has but he wanted to start at the side of one of my breasts and stop at the other side. So it wouldn't go across the sternum. It turned out that cut was too small, so he had to make a bigger one. Now it starts right a one side and goes across the front to the other side. It doesn't go to my back or anything but really stops where my breasts stop. It doesn't go all the way to my armpit either.

When I met with the surgeon at Cleveland he said that the incision used is surgeon preference. 2 Surgeons there prefer the clamshell while the other prefers the medial. I'm sure other factors come into play... like how the person's body is. I do like Linds' incisions. When it comes to tx scars, they are by far the coolest <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

I got mine done at Cleveland (where Jen will have hers) and was told the same thing....it is the surgeons preference. I have seen more often than not the clamshell cut under the breasts.

I personally didn't mind that mine was down the sternum because I have so many scars that I really just don't care anymore. I don't wear a bikini so that doesn't bother me. If I do wear a low cut shirt, it doesn't bother me. I don't think that I have ever had anyone stare at my scar and even if they did, who cares? The scar is because a procedure that saved my life.

Thanks - I love my scars too I think they are neat.

For our center they prefer the incisions I have because they told me it kind of separates the two - almost like having two surgeries because they do each lung one at a time. Thay said it can minimize risk of infection because the entire area isn't open for the entire length of the procedure. That and if they have a problem with one they don't have the other side open at that time.

Who knows. There are several people at my center that have the clamshell incision too but those situations they required ALOT of extra stuff. Like one person his heart had shifted so they had to go in through the front to keep an eye on that situation and the other the girl was just seriously ill and the required bypass and some other involved stuff for her surgery.

I agree with the who cares if people stare. I will admit I sometimes wear shirts that show my scar just so people will stare because I think it is funny. I am proud of them and I am proud because there are a LOT of people that would not be able to make it through a transplant mentally - not so much physically and I did both so it is a reminder of my accomplishment in that aspect.

Take Care guys.
