crazy sugars and a little frightened

Leah, when I realized I was having blodo sugar issues, I got supplies from a local drugstore, took my blood sugar at home almost every hour during the waking day for 2 weeks and presented the data to an endocrinologist at my CF clinic. She promptly diagnosed me with CFRD and put me on insulin...

    flying with CF medical equipment

Yep, pretty much what believingjesus said. Security has always seemed surprisingly laid back about medical stuff, but I always travel with my husband and two children. Do not be surprised if you are pulled aside for a more "thorough" evaluation, especially if you are traveling alone. I have...

I was treated like a freak

This is standard protocol at our clinic and I am THRILLED by it. In fact, if they werent so careful, I'd go elsewhere. Since you have such a high FEV1 Enzo, they are primarily doing it for YOUR benefit, so people with CF who are a lot sicker dont infect you. I wont even walk in my local...

    Weird SOB, weight on chest

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I'm following up on them with my doc. I'll let you know if they find anything.

    Weird SOB, weight on chest

I've had asthma for decades, both acute and chronic, it's definitely not that.

    Weird SOB, weight on chest

OK, so I was waiting for my daughter's practice to finish when sudden I felt like I had this heavy weight on my chest and was extremely short of breath. My O2 sats, which had been happily bopping along at 93, suddenly dropped to 86 and my heart rate accelerated. Then, after about 2-3 minutes...

    Cough question

I can answer 3, 4 , and 5. No, not everyone with CF has a cough. I didnt as a child, unless I was in the midst of an exacerbation. If you do tend to have a cough, it can take a break, especially seasonally. I have had coughs dissappear after treatment AND spontaneously as my immune system got...

    Transplant or Not to Transplant?

Krazy4Katie, I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. Our opinion if we were in your daughters shoes? I would definitely go for the transplant. I'm currently where your daughter was prior to 2/15/15; 44% FEV1, O2 during the night, so I've been wrestling with this question, knowing I could...

    MDR pseudomonas treatments?

I've found mucomyst/alupent mix the best for getting out thick, tenacious secretions. Sorry to hear about this, I know how exhausting it can be.

Does a tune up mean iv?

Yes, tune-up means IV, though not necessarily in the hospital. I always get my IV's/PICC's placed via out-patient services and do everything at home. Much safer and most restful for me. :)

    Parents of ADULTS with CF

AlwaysAmom- Sadly, I have known parents that did not take good care of their child because they thought she was a burden. As horrid as it is, I truly believe they were trying to "hasten the process". They never had decent food in the house, hemmed and hawed before getting her medical care...

    Himalayan Salt Inhaler

I purchased one and didnt notice any difference for the time I used it. I was also concerned that there didnt seem to be a great way to keep it clean. If anyone has any suggestions on that front, love to hear them.

    Nitrous Oxide

Thats interesting about the valium...they gave it to me once prior to surgery and it hyped me up so much I was practically manic. Never again.

    Nitrous Oxide

Regarding novacaine, I have noticed that I metabolize it (and other painkillers) extremely quickly and usually have to get "booster" shots during a dental procedure. That might be useful info to keep in mind if your son is not good at communicating his needs and you want to make doubly sure he...

    Common cold turning into more?

I dont usually get the colds that my kids bring home. If I do, they are generally short and cause a temporary drop in my O2 sats and some wheezing, coughing. But 90% of the time that all clears up after about a week. If at any point my sputum changes to a more virulent color, if I start...

    Duke CF Center

Rosie, thanks so much for the info. I'm pretty impressed with their transplant record too, and in the last 6 months went from 59% to low 40's..... (w/NO infection) My current clinic finally figured out (OK, actually I did, not them) that I have diabetes and I feel a bit better now on insulin...

    Duke CF Center

Can folks chime in on how they like the Duke CF center, especially its infection control procedures, doctors, responsiveness to issues, etc.? I'm also interested in any experiences people have had there with lungs transplants. Thanks a bunch. :D

    Nitrous Oxide

I've had nitrous once a long time ago. Never again. I cant really explain what happened, but whatever did caused a panic reaction in me and I ripped off the mask and wouldnt put it back on. I have also reacted very badly to anesthetics before. Once, got put in a coma, another time I had...
