Tonya, we are on the 12/6 plan right now.
What we are doing is that unless one of us is staying up for other reasons I set my alarm for 11:30, get up and start Amikacin and set alarm for about 12:10. Get up, flush & swap for Timentin, set alarm for 1ish. Get up, flush & finish.
Then repeat at 5:30 which works better since I get up for work at 6.
It does impact sleep a bit, but no more than a pump going off and we can change it 90% of the time w/o disturbing him.
Note: as for air bubbles, the only air would be introduced by the pharmacist (big no-no) and there is a filter in the line to capture the air for safety purposes. The only issue is that yes, if you get occluded or forget to unclamp the picc you don't get the infusion and there is no warning.
