I'll join the e-mail barrage! Emily got her vest at 18 months and about 16 pounds. She has done great! Her chest x-rays have shown much imprvement since starting the vest. Nothing "Shoots her across the room" except herself. She has been known to drag the vest (compressor and all) a few feet t o get something she wants. (Reminds me of those "strong men" competions where the guys pull semi tractors with a harness around thier chests...)

PM me and I'll give you our pulmo's name and number. YOu can give that to your doc so they can figure out how to go about perscribing the vest for your little guys!

It's just crazy that you have to fight like this!!!!!

our clinic doesn't recommend vests for young kids either. The reasons I was given was that they want parents to know how to do manual cpt and that no studies have been done on the effects of the vest on small children, something about shaken baby syndrome. Last summer I went in ready to argue and when I brought it up they said she was big enough and they'd prescribe one for me. Lili at the time was 4 1/2 and about 40 lbs. We chose the Repirtech and are happy with it.

I'm glad we know how to do manual cpt and she was always compliant but the vest has been great.

Good luck.

We got Maggie's vest when she was 2 years and a few months. At the time, she was coughing and it was right before her first hospitalization for respiratory stuff. I brought up the VEST first. It was the social worker who actually got the ball rolling; I was telling her how we stayed up late at night to do Maggie's chest pt and she spoke with the pulmo and he wrote the script. It was covered by insurance and the RT told me that for CF it should always be covered for that diagnosis. When Maggie got admitted to Children's Hospital in Boston; the staff kept saying they haven't seen someone so little(she was 2 1/2 ) with the VEST on and be so calm with it; though that was 2 1/2 years ago. The Vest is definately a good thing.

My son just got his vest before Thanksgiving and we love it. Our doctors office said that the cut off was a chest size of 19 inches. My son's chest size was only 18.5 inches but they tried it out anyway and the vest fit good enough for the order to be placed for the vest. They are very proactive when it comes to any kind of preventitive treatment for the kids.
Something I wonder is if the clinics that are not promoting the vest for younger kids are afraid of sucking up some of the cost of the vest.
They run about 16,000 dollars and if the local insurance is not good at covering medical equipment then maybe the clinics don't have the resources to cover the rest of the cost if the family's can't do it themselves.
Anyway I would definitly push for the vest. It is so much more effective then just CPT.
Good luck
