CF and Pregnancy: It's Do-able, but it's still a high-risk proposition for many women

Fair enough. All I'm saying is, I've seen it happen. And I don't have a study. I don't care enough to look for one, I've got a headache and I don't want to search for it. Hah. I didn't even say it happens often. I just don't think it's incredibly rare.

I don't need a study, go take a look at the preggo forum. We listed our pfts and our health before during and after.</end quote></div>
Whether or not we choose to believe it, this is not a fair representation of CF women and their pregnancies. We are a small population. Not everyone reads CF forums.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Also I've never heard of them doing a study where a whole bunch of CF women have died from giving birth. I'm sure YEARS ago maybe, but not now. I'm sure women die but in order for it to be the result of giving birth it would have to take place within the 6months of having the baby. To say that a women died YEARS later was a result of pregnancy, I don't see how they can correlate.</end quote></div>
I didn't say die giving birth. Not once. I said the pregnancy has a serious impact. Like, the strain on the body causes permanent lung damage. Some die shortly thereafter, whether it be months or years. If it's within a few short years, and their health was okay beforehand, I'd say yes, the pregnancy had something to do with it.

I'm not saying it happens all the time. I'm just saying I've seen it.

Odds of a Successful Pregnancy

This is a great topic, My CF nurse just presented a big research project at the CF conference in CA a week or so ago on CF women having babies.. I have clinic next week, I can't wait to ask her for a copy of the report to read.

For me, sadly, no biological kids will be in my future... I love kids more then anything in the world and they honestly do light up my life, but, my body is not in good enough shape, maybe someday if I suddenly get my body in better shape, if my bones get stronger, it would take a miracle honestly.

For now, I feel like I am so busy just working that I don't have time to be a good mother and I certainly don't want my child to see me suffer and be sick all the time when it is time for me to die.

I have to admit I am jealous of moms on here that seem to be able to manage motherhood, health and still manage to feel decent.

Odds of a Successful Pregnancy

This is a very interesting topic.

This subject came up at Courtney's last doc appointment.

He sat her down and say "You are old enough now we need to have this conversation. Although CF women have a much more difficult time becoming pregnant, YOU CAN GET PREGNANT." He got right up next to her and said "do you understand me, you can get pregnant and if you do not want that to happen you need to protect yourself!" Courtney told him she understood and when the time came she would make sure to take precautions.

My questions is this:

As far as weight, when would you be considered "healthy enough" to have a child?
Is there a standard for this? I know we have the weight charts to go by, but does this change when you are talking pregnancy?

Courtney stands 5 foot 3 1/2 inches tall and only weighs 82 pounds. I know her nutrition is not good because she is not having regular periods. The doc said this is a big sign that she is still not getting all the nutrience (sp?) from her food. She is already on 6 enzymes per meal 4 per snack, but we think we are going to have to up the dose at her next appointment.

As of now Courtney says she wants to adopt two children when she is older, but she is only 14 and that can change.
